Dec. 21, 2017: Determining Reading Time

The students read in class and kept track of the time to determine how long it will take to read their novel over the holidays. The average reading time is about five hours. Please keep this in mind and plan accordingly as it must be read when you return.

Wed. Dec. 20, 2017: Boy in the Striped Pajamas Introduction

Today, you were instructed to take out the novel,   The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. I then introduced it to you with a Powerpoint. If you were not here, please get this book from the library. YOU NEED TO READ CHAPTER 1 FOR TONIGHT.

Tues. Dec. 19, 2017: Macbeth Completion and Questions

Today, you finished viewing Macbeth and were given two questions to answer in long form. These were due at the end of class. I have pasted these below: Answer the following questions. Focus on creating proper sentences for each question. 1. What was different between the film and the play summary Ms. Benoit provided? 2. Who is the most "guilty" character: the witches, Lady Macbeth, Macbeth, or the murderers? Explain.

Mon. Dec. 18, 2017: Macbeth Film Continued

Today, we carried on watching the film,  Macbeth . You also took notes on the differences between the film and my summary of the play.

Fri. Dec. 15, 2018: Powerpoint of Macbeth Completion

Today, I went through the summary of Macbeth up to the end. I you were not here, you will have to do a Web Search to find this out. Students also did a timed writing activity.

Thurs. Dec. 14, 2017: Powerpoint and Film Viewing

Today, I showed you a Powerpoint summarizing the first part of the play Macbeth . We then watched 40 minutes of the film. While watching, you were to jot down the differences you saw.

Wed. Dec. 13, 2017: Macbeth: Shakespeare Introduction

Today, I introduced the students to some context surrounding Shakespeare. I talked about his life, his wife, the social conditions and forms of entertainment.

Tues. Dec. 12, 2017: Short Story M.C. Exam

Students wrote their Short Story Multiple Choice exam today. When finished, they were instructed to read the introduction and leading character list for the play Macbeth.

Mon. Dec. 11, 2017: Final Essay Writing Class & Test Discussion

Today, the students were able to revise and edit their essays. These need to be in their school folios. If a student finished at home, that student needs to transfer the paper, ensure the layout hasn't changed, and call it "Essay One." I then discussed the reading comprehension portion of tomorrow's exam. The students will actively read two essays and answer the multiple choice questions for them. This will involve active reading (before and during steps) and active reading and process of elimination for the questions. I then had the students go to the library and sign out the play Macbeth . They will need to have this in the room for an after test reading

Fri. Dec. 8, 2017: Essay Editing Class

Today, you edited your essay using the editing checklist on the back of the questions page. It is due at the end of the day today.

Thurs. Dec. 7, 2017: Essay Writing Class

Yesterday, students were to complete their rough copy. Today, they are to input the essay they wrote into the computer.

Wed. Dec. 6, 2017: Writing Class

Yesterday, you were given your essay assignment. You were also given a booklet entitled "How to Write a Seven Sentence Introductory Paragraph" If you were not here, it is in your portfolio. Today, you will write your essay. By the end of class, you should have a pretty good first draft completed and on the computer (especially if you came up with your thesis yesterday).

Mon. Dec. 4, 2017: Blueprint Registration and catch-up

Today, students attempted to register and log in to Blueprints, a career tool. Some could not. As a result, some worked on catch-up.

Tues. Dec. 5, 2017: Essay on Multiple Articles

Today, the students were given their essay assignment. They are to come in with their thesis for me to approve tomorrow and then their rough copy is due at the end of class tomorrow. I have linked the instructions below. Essay Unit Writing Assignment

Fri. Dec. 1, 2017: Discussion of Fact vs. Opinion & Completing Active Reading of "Children of the Earth"

Today, I started off by presenting a hypothetical situation which we then discussed. I have pasted it below.  Hypothetical situation: Bob is caught cheating on a test. Ms. Benoit calls him on it and tells him that the class is very disappointed in him. Is this a fact or an opinion? Explain your position. Most of the class stated that this was an opinion as it hadn't been proven. We then added "evidence:"   Chase and Alvin were so upset that they both left the room and refused to return until David was punished.  Kecia agreed and felt that the crime was so bad that David should be publicly beaten . Nolan and Abby not only agreed but went so far as to offer to administer the punishment. We agreed that these "weird" examples back up the claim of disappointed.  I then showed them a case where evidence is presented, but it doesn't prove an opinion: David enjoys playing basketball , working on art projects , eating pepperoni pizza , ...
