Thurs. Nov. 30, 2017: Third Essay Presented

Today, you submitted your active reading and answers for the Essay by David Suzuki. I then gave you a much shorter essay, "Children of the Earth," to actively read and answer questions about. If you were not here, this is in your portfolio.

Wed. Nov. 29, 2017: Continued on Essay Analysis

Today, we continued working on the reading you received yesterday. Much of our time was spent on MLA Citation. Get the questions done for tonight.

Tues. Nov. 28, 2017: Essay Analysis and Questions: "Are There No Limits?"

Today, students were given the essay "Are There No Limits," by David Suzuki, to actively read and answer questions about. If a student was not here, the reading is in the student's portfolio. The questions were already handed out ("Questions for Analyzing any Text") and are on a blue sheet of paper.

Thurs. Nov. 23, 2017: Discussion of Answer Expectations

     Today, we discussed assignment expectations. I have pasted all the notes below: 1.       Your work needs a title: In this case “Answers for the Essay” would have been minimally acceptable (giving me the title of the essay would have been a lot better) Answers for “Science Class…” Essay 2.       You must write in pen!!!!!!!!! (anything but grammar work, multiple choice exams, active reading assignments and your own notes). 3.       Stop writing in the margin!!! 4.       You must put capitals at the beginning of sentences and periods (end-punctuation) at the end of sentences. 5.       Read your sentences over AGAIN before handing anything in. MANY of you are missing vital words. 6.       Read the question over AGAIN and CHECK to see if you have actually answered it! 7.       Look...

Today, you were given the essay " A Couple of Really Neat Guys," by Dave Barry to actively read. You were then to answer the questions I have given you entitled "Questions for Analyzing Any Text." These are to be answered fully and on a separate sheet of paper for Monday.

Wed. Nov. 22, 2017: Essay Questions

Today, those of you who finished actively reading your essays were then given questions to apply to one of the essays you read. the assignment was due today. If you were not here, see me.

Tues. Nov. 21, 2017: Analysis and Discussion Questions for Memoir

Today, I modeled active reading of the memoir "Annie Edson Taylor" and then we used process of elimination to answer the questions. The students have until tomorrow to actively read the three essays they chose.

Mon. Nov. 20, 2017: Essay Reading Day

Today, students chose three from a number of essays to read actively. If you were not here, the readings are in your portfolio. These are relatively short in length, so you should be able to read them for tomorrow. If you were not here, it is up to you to come and empty your portfolio in the morning and get caught up before class or at lunch.

Thurs. Nov. 16, 2017: Discussion of Active Reading in Tests & Two Active Readings

Today, we briefly discussed the test from yesterday. If you have not written it, please make arrangements to do so tomorrow or on Monday. In addition to this, I also instructed you to finish the active reading from yesterday and then read the memoir Annie Edson Taylor for tomorrow as well.

Wed. Nov. 15, 2017: Test & Essay Overivew

Today, you wrote your comprehension exam on Drama as well as on comma and apostrophe usage. You were then instructed to actively read the booklet on expository writing in preparation for the next unit.

Tues, Nov. 14, 2017: Test Prep for tomorrow's exam

Tomorrow, you will write a reading comprehension (one drama reading) and punctuation (comma usage, apostrophe usage) exam with twenty questions. I gave you more exercises today to help you prepare. If you were not here, they are in your portfolio.

Fri. Nov. 10, 2017: Comma Usage

Today, I finished my discussion on comma usage. We practiced the rules as a class. If you were not here, there is a copy of my notes (Powerpoint) in your portfolio. Keep in mind that your test on Wednesday will be on reading comprehension, comma usage, possessives, and contractions. It will all be multiple choice. Be sure you get both possessives worksheets and the contractions worksheet into me before class on Tuesday as we will be discussing it then.

Thurs. Nov. 9, 2017: Comma Usage

The students will be writing a drama reading and grammar comprehension exam on Wednesday November 15. In preparation for this, I am reviewing the grammar they will be tested on, including apostrophe possessives and contractions, types of sentences, and comma usage. I showed a Powerpoint today with questions for practice. If you were not here, I have copied my slides and put them in your portfolios. Get them in the morning and read them actively to be prepared for class.

Wed. Nov. 8, 2017: Apostrophe Contractions

Students actively read and then answered questions to demonstrate understanding of apostrophe contractions. If you were not here, the assignment is in your portfolio.

Tues. NOv. 7, 2017: Apostrophe Possessives

 Today, we discussed the use of the apostrophe possessives. I showed you a Powerpoint to help and instructed you to ACTIVELY read the rules sheet given out tomorrow. I then gave you mire questions to try. These new questions and the ones assigned yesterday are all due tomorrow.

Mon. Nov. 6, 2017: Reading Plus

Today, you are doing a ReadingPlus assessment. If you are not here, you will have to do this at lunchtime. Be sure to have your headphones.

Fri. Nov. 3, 2017: "After" activities for "Esso"

Today, you worked as a group and completed all the "after" activities for the Teleplay "Esso." REMEMBER: you need to bring your headphones/ear buds for Monday  as we are doing a midpoint "ReadingPlus" assessment. This is NOT something to stress over. If you have been taking the program and activities seriously, we should see some improvement. This is all I am focusing on.

Thurs. Nov. 2, 2017: Reading "Esso" & Discussion of Thumbprints

Today, we finished reading the play "Esso." If you were not here, get it read. I then explained that even short works are made up of many clips. I showed a number of commercials and we counted the changes in images and camera angles.

Wed. Nov. 1, 2017: Play: Esso & Journal

Today, you did a journal on a family theme. We then began to read the teleplay Esso . I put this play in everyone's portfolio last week. We got up to page 16, Scene 6
