Tues. Oct. 31, 2017: Assess and Reflect: The Poetry Unit Exam (MC)

Today, your exams were returned to you and you were given questions to help you assess the results. If you were not here, you will have to do this in class, either in the morning, at lunch or after school as the test is secured.

Mon. Oct. 30, 2017: Drama Analysis

Today, you got into groups and actively read the play excerpt from "Leaving Home." You then worked on the questions. The active reading and questions are due tomorrow. If you were not here, see me int he morning so you will not have to write the alternative.

Fri. Oct. 27, 2017: Drama Introduction/"Media Menace" Reading & Questions

Today, we reviewed some common drama terms and then I had the student break into groups. They were then given an excerpt from "Media Menace." They had to divy up the parts, read it actively, and then answer the questions. I am unable to post this due to copyright. If a student wasn't here, that student should see me Monday morning to get the work and avoid having to do an alternative.

Thurs. Oct. 26, 2017: Drama Introduction

Today I introduced the concept of drama (a play). I explained conflict, rising action and climax and the types of stage and types of plays (comedy and tragedy). Tomorrow, we will begin with a small "practice" piece in order to get comfortable reading this form.

Wed. Oct. 25, 2017: Poetry Unit Exam

Today,  students wrote their poetry unit exam with emphasis on process. Tomorrow, I will introduce plays.

Tues. Oct. 24, 2017: Test Prep: Poetry

Today, I handed out the test prep sheet for tomorrow's exam. I am pasting it below: ELA B 10 Poetry Unit: Test Prep Your exam will consist of two poetry readings and ten figurative devices questions. There are 17 questions total. They are all multiple choice. Each reading must be read actively (see below). Each multiple choice question must be answered using process of elimination (eliminating the “wrong” answers to arrive at the best two and then circling the best one) and active reading. Today, we marked the questions for "Billy Paris."

Fri. Oct. 20, 2017: Discussion of "Billy Paris" Analysis

Today, we marked the analysis portion of "Billy Paris." We will mark the multiple choice section on Monday.

Thurs. Oct. 19, 2017: Catch-up

Students were to finish actively reading and actively answering multiple choice questions for the poem "Billy Paris." I then allowed them time to catch up or get a book from the library as students are supposed to be reading daily.

Fri. Oct. 13, 2017: Poetry Analysis (and additional reading

Today, you were given the reading "Africville Forever" and the poem "We are Africville." Please read the first one BEFORE analyzing ("Before," "During," and "After") the poem in order to get the context. This is due for Tuesday's class. If you were not here, look up Africville Canada. Thurs. Oct. 12, 2017: Paragraph Reflection

Today, you were given your paragraph back, a number of handouts pertaining to the assignment (some you might already have) and a reflection activity to complete. This is to be done in this class period. If you were not here, be sure to get all of this from you portfolio.

Wed. Oct. 11, 2017: Reading analysis and multiple choice questions

Today, you were given a reading and multiple choice questions to answer. These are in your portfolios. Do the "before" and "During" activities/steps (not the "After") on the text provided. Answer the multiple choice questions and then staple them to the reading and submit.

Tues. October 10, 2017: Poetry Analysis for "Dreams Deferred"

Today, we analyzed the poem "Dreams Deferred" which was to be completed for last Friday's class. After this,students were to have submitted their analysis of the poem "Incident."

Today, we discussed the answers to the poem you were given yesterday. Students continued working on the poem I gave them yesterday. It is due for tomorrow's class.

Wed. Oct. 4, 2017: How to Read Poetry Cont. & Poem to "Read"

Today, the students and I finished figuring out the steps to reading poetry Using the poem "Hams>' I have pasted the steps below that are to be applied to each poem. I then gave out a short poem for them to analyze. I have also pasted this below. Students will work on this tomorrow as well. How to Actively Read a Poem Before (On Front) 1.       Look at the title of this poem. What might it mean? Write what you think down. 2.       Look at the layout of the poem. Note the number of stanzas, lines, rhyme schemes and any layout that deviates from a flush left set up. Write these down and then highlight all punctuation. During (On Front) 3.       First Read: Read the poem through paying attention to the punctuation (stopping at periods, slowing down at commas). While reading, highlight words/phrases that are unknown or confusing (different colour highlighter). 4.     ...

Today, I gave you your literary Unit Exam back. You were then given the opportunity to argue the answers amongst group members and submit your arguments to me for consideration.
